It's an adventure. Our family of five is taking a year off from... the normal. Less work. More travel. Even (gasp!) homeschooling! We invite you to come along with us as we head West. Then on to Europe. Even grand times at home in between! Our goals: Rest. Connect. Experience. We hope to grow closer as a family and gain a deeper appreciation of all that God is, does, gives. Scaled back commitments. Scaled up adventure. Come along with us as the story unfolds!

McLuxembourg Gardens

After a busy week with my mom, we slept in this morning and just hung out.  It's not Mother's Day in France today, but some time in late June.  But sweet Kevin bought me a beautiful bouquet!

We went to a late church service (3:30!) and then headed over to Luxembourg Gardens.  We'd heard they had lots of fun kids' activities, so we wanted to see what they had to offer.  By the time we got there, we were feeling hungry, so we just looked around, planning to come back another day to take advantage of all the kids' activities, like pony rides, puppet shows, etc.  It's a huge garden/park area.  There's a lake in the middle where you can rent little sailboats to go around in the water.  We watched for awhile, and we even saw a cute family of mallard ducks!

We decided to go buy some dinner to eat at the park.  We had hoped for some baguettes, cheese and fruit, but none of those kinds of stores were open, at least near the park.  So we settled for the something else...

Yes, McDonald's.  It was weird to be there.  It was familiar, yet not familiar.  The menu was in English, but there were no quarter pounders, but "royal burgers" instead?  Somehow we managed to get what we needed.  And, by the way, it was packed in there!  So, we took our food and went back to the park.  We weren't sure where to sit.  There's all these chairs set out, but most of them were taken.  And there's this weird rule about not sitting in the grass.  We had been at a park the day before, were sitting on the grass, and we got kicked off the grass by a security guard.  Anyway, today, we saw some people sitting on a grassy area, and we assumed we could sit on that grassy area.  We sat down, made ourselves comfortable, and here comes the grass police.  He tells us "bon appetit,"  and then proceeds to speak in French.  We didn't understand his words, but it was obvious from his motions that we needed to move (by the way, he made all the people move from that grassy area).
No this isn't where we were sitting, but this picture just cracks me up.  There's all these people sitting (in chairs on gravel) around the grass.  There's no flowers, just grass.
At least we found some nice benches to sit on.
Here's Kevin trying to solve Anna's crisis that she didn't receive a plain hamburger (it had  ketchup, mustard, and onions on it - horrors!)
Ok, I'll be honest.  I was feeling a little bit of a bad attitude.  My mantra of "we're in Paris, we're in Paris" wasn't quite working.  Mostly, I've been loving our time here, but I felt annoyed about McDonald's, no sitting on the grass, complaining children, impatient me, whatever else.  I was trying to find my good attitude, really I was!  (That's what we've said to our kids sometimes, when they have a bad attitude - "Find your good attitude!).  And then, a little blessing occurred.  We were right next to this pavilion, and there was an orchestra there that started playing music!  It totally relaxed me!

It turned out to be a really nice day!
