It's an adventure. Our family of five is taking a year off from... the normal. Less work. More travel. Even (gasp!) homeschooling! We invite you to come along with us as we head West. Then on to Europe. Even grand times at home in between! Our goals: Rest. Connect. Experience. We hope to grow closer as a family and gain a deeper appreciation of all that God is, does, gives. Scaled back commitments. Scaled up adventure. Come along with us as the story unfolds!

Yellowstone

What a full time in Yellowstone!  We drove in Sunday afternoon/evening and headed straight for Old Faithful.  We gathered with lots of other people waiting for Old Faithful to show its glory!  The geyser was constantly steaming, and as it got closer to the estimated eruption time, the geyser would start sputtering more, kind of teasing us!  Finally, at 7:03pm, it shot up!  (The boys wanted to change the name to "Old Mostly Faithful," since it was three minutes later than the later estimate.)  It was so amazing!  It probably lasted for about one or two minutes.  Wow!

You can't quite tell from the picture because of all the steam, but there is a huge fountain of water shooting up to about 180ft!

After leaving Old Faithful, we ate dinner (thank goodness for restaurants that carry buttered pasta for our picky children!),  and headed to our Holiday Inn in West Yellowstone.  After a waking up and having breakfast, we headed back over to Yellowstone.  It was so amazing driving through all the scenery: beautiful mountains, meadows, cliffs, and every now and then, steaming geysers!

On our way to see Artists Paintpots, we stopped off to see a small spring area.  It was wild to see steam rising from the spring, with little areas of bubbling.

At Artist Paintpots, there were several shallow springs that were colored orange, green, and blue around the edges, because of the minerals and microbes.

Another cool thing at the Artists Paintpots area was this white bubbling mud pot.  It sounded so gloppy (I know, not a word, but it's the best one I can come up with!)  Also, everything there had that sulfur/rotten egg type smell!

We stopped for lunch at this peaceful place by a river.  It was so relaxing just to hang out and enjoy the beautiful view!

The kids got some energy out frolicking in the meadow!
The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone was so amazing (I know I keep using that word, but it fits!).  We had several views of the Lower Falls, which was beautiful!  We a took a short but steep hike down to get a closer view of the falls after this picture below was taken.  It started to rain lightly, so we were glad we had our ponchos.  I don't have pictures because my camera battery ran out!  But it was also a great view.  The kids were troopers, although Daniel definitely walked faster on the way back to the car (like a horse going back to the stable!).

And what's Yellowstone without seeing some wildlife!  Our first evening we didn't see much, but then on Monday we saw more!  A bald eagle perched on a tree, some elk by the side of the road, several bison.  As we were leaving Yellowstone at sunset, we passed two bison walking along the road!  They're huge!

Tuesday, we'll head back through Yellowstone and Grand Teton to finish up some Junior Ranger stuff, and then head to Montpelier Idaho for some down time!

And in case you're wondering, the stuffed animal count is up to six already, thanks to Daniel and Justin helping out.  Kevin and I did have to set some rules about not buying any more stuffed animals that make noise (after hearing howling, whistling, and screeching more than we could stand, and no, that's not the kids!)
